Outcomes

1. Demonstrate understanding of electrical theory, circuit construction, and the operation of various automotive electrical accessory systems.
2. Understand how to use diagnostic equipment to proficiently diagnose and service vehicle electrical systems.
3. Understand the roles of sensors, actuators, and data networks in vehicle electronics.
4. Be able to pass the Electrical/Electronic Systems ASE certification exam.
5. Know how to prepare for internship and career opportunities.

Description

This course will build on the principles of electricity and electronics as they are applied to automotive electrical systems. Topics covered include the various accessories in an automobile, computerized circuits, and network communications. Students will understand and become proficient at diagnosing and repairing all types of electrical circuits.

Learning Model Architecture

This course utilizes the BYU-Idaho Learning Model in its design. The activity type can be broken down as follows:

Prepare

Students will be assigned weekly readings and videos to study and prepare for the graded assignments in the course.

Teach One Another

The primary TOA component in this course is a weekly peer review of student responses to essay questions on the topic of the week. There is also a discussion in Week 08 focused on students sharing experiences and advice for developing professional networks.

Ponder and Prove

Most of the graded assignments in this class fall under this category of the Learning Model. They include quizzes, exams, essay questions, interactive activities where students build circuit diagrams, and case studies where students simulate the diagnosing and repairing an actual automotive problem. There is also a cover letter assignment and resume assignment students will complete.

Prerequisites

Students should have taken AUTO 131 and AUTO 155 prior to taking AUTO 331.

Required Materials

All required materials are available in the course free of charge.

Grading Policies

Late work will not be accepted, except at the instructor's discretion.

Assignments are graded on a point system and are organized into the following categories:

• Quizzes: 15% of the total grade
• Activities: 25% of the total grade
• Thinking Questions: 15% of the total grade
• Peer Review: 10% of the total grade
• Exams: 35% of the total grade

There are six total exams in the course. They are arranged as a series of checkpoints where the emphasis of each exam is on the most recent topics studied, but questions from previous topics will also be included in the exam. Your score for the exam category (35% of your total grade) will be comprised entirely of your most recent checkpoint exam score, even if your most recent score is worse than a previous score. The only exception to this policy is if you fail to take a checkpoint exam, in which case your exam score will be a zero until you can arrange with your instructor to take the exam late for a reduced grade.
