Learning Model

This course seeks to apply the principles and steps of the learning model throughout the course. Students will be expected to exercise faith in Jesus Christ, seek teaching from the Holy Ghost and study the word of God as aids to their efforts to complete their individual and group assignments. By participating in discussion boards in addition to completing the reading summary and major assignments, students will be expected to act for themselves and accept responsibility for learning and teaching. This course also encourages students to develop their ability to love, serve and teach one another by being open and thoughtful in responding to discussion prompts and replying to others' posts and in working within a group.

Students will prepare to learn by studying the readings and study pages provided in the course and creating summary documents that show their preparation. Students will ponder lessons learned and teach one another by sharing insights and responding to prompts in the discussion boards. Students will then prove their learning by turning in reflection papers, completing exams, and presenting their group projects.

Grading (745 total points)

1. Reading Summaries (10 points each; 13 total summaries; 130 total points)

It is critical that students ponder what they are reading in order to have an effective learning experience. To help ensure students contemplate the reading, one-page reading summaries are required for each major reading.

2. Reflection Papers (3) (35 points each; 105 total); Action Plan (20 points)

At various times in the course students will complete “Reflection Exercises."  After each “Reflection Exercise” you will write a three page paper addressing and summarizing the content of each “Reflection Exercise” worksheet. We will complete three of these “Reflection Exercises” for which you will be required to write a paper. The paper is due at the beginning of the class period one week from the class period in which we complete the exercise. There is no right or wrong responses on the papers; you will be graded on your level of seriousness, depth of thought, and self-awareness demonstrated throughout the paper (grammar, punctuation and sentence structure also count in the grading).

3. Exams (2) (190 points total)

The course is divided into three units—Unit 1: Leadership at the Individual Level; Unit 2: Leadership at the Team or Group Level; and Unit 3: Leadership at the Organizational Level. There will be an online, remote proctored exam for Units 1 and 2. Unit 3 will not have an exam because students will work in groups to complete a case study instead.

4. Scripture Leadership Principle Paper (30 points)

Currently, Amazon offers 57,136 books with the word “leadership” in the title! If someone were able to read all of them, rather than being enlightened as to the “best” leadership model or principles, they would be entirely confused. Nevertheless, it says a lot about our need as humans to understand and practice better leadership. God is the perfect leader and if we want to understand how He leads, we should make the scriptures our primary text for leadership principles. Accordingly, each of you will prayerfully identify a leadership principle (or two) from the scriptures, write a two-page summary of the leadership principle(s), and be prepared to share the principle(s) with the class.

5. Strategic Plan (200 points)

In your assigned group, you will develop a strategic plan based on instruction and methods presented in the course and on information and data presented in two cases studies. This case study assignment is segmented into two parts. Each group will deliver two 15-minute presentations—one for each part of the case study.

6. Pondering Assignments and Discussion Boards (70 points)

As part of your education at BYU-Idaho, you are expected to be an active participant in your learning. This includes pondering the materials and experiences you have in the course and loving, serving and teaching one another. As such, points will be given for participation on discussion boards and short ponder assignments. Although these assignments are only worth a few points, active participation will be essential in developing your ability to be a good leader.

You will not be graded on a curve. Each student will receive the value he or she earns by performing in class.
