Course Syllabus
Overview
This is the second of two courses on foreign language teaching methodology. This course emphasizes Assessment, Technology, Deep Culture Issues in Teaching, and Classroom Management. It is a three-credit hour course.
Requirements
Prerequisites
Completed or concurrently enrolled in TESOL 102—TESOL Pedagogy I
Required Resources
This course does not use resources outside of the course with the exception of some external articles, particularly from the ACTFL website. There is no paid textbook.
Structure
Course Outcomes (CO)
- Recognize the role of cultural diversity in the classroom and how it affects interpretation and assessment.
- Demonstrate knowledge of common classroom management strategies.
- Demonstrate competency in both general and linguistic assessment techniques.
- Demonstrate competency in adopting and adapting new tools to second-language instruction.

Weekly Patterns

Learning Model
This course adheres to the principles of the BYU-Idaho Learning Model, namely in that you will be required to prepare through thoughtful study, engage in discussion with your classmates to teach one another, and ponder and prove your study by demonstrably applying the principles and topics in the course.
Expectations
Feedback
You can expect to receive grades and feedback within seven days of the due date for all assignments.
Workload
Begin your week with any assigned quizzes. The reading assignments on which the quizzes are based are linked in the quiz instructions. If there is a discussion in a given week, be sure to fully reply to the prompt by the midweek due date, then engage in a discussion over the remainder of the week. All assignments are due at the end of the week, but will require multiple sessions throughout the week to complete. Do not wait until the last day to begin working on your assignments.
Group Work
There is one group discussion in the Tool Evaluation module where you will claim a tool to evaluate and share that evaluation with your classmates.
Late Work
As a sign of professionalism and respect, you should complete your work on time. However, your instructor has the discretion to accept late work or extend due dates as appropriate.
Retries
Each quiz allows two attempts. Any missing work may possibly be made up, but that is at the discretion of your instructor.
Extra Credit
There is one extra credit activity in the unit on Technology Integration.
