W04 Math Lesson: Introduction to Multiplication and Division

Overview

Task: Study and work through the following math lesson AND complete the Math Gathering Activity prior to Gathering.

Last week you practiced addition and subtraction with decimals as well as rounding. This week you will be building on those concepts by learning about multiplication and division. Though different and unique components of arithmetic, multiplication and division are in many ways built upon the same principles as addition and subtraction. For example, multiplication is essentially complex addition involving multiples of the same number being added together (i.e. 3x4= 3+3+3+3). For this reason, it is important that you review last week’s lesson material, if necessary, before moving onto this week’s lesson material.

Pre-Reflection

You have been asked to help with the food for a ward party. How can multiplication and division help you plan for the proper amount of food?

Be sure to review the Gathering Math Activity at the bottom of this lesson before attending the gathering this week.

Math Instruction and Practice

This math lesson is broken into several mini-lessons, each containing a lot of material. Be sure to start early in the week in case you need extra time to study and practice. To save you time and quickly discover which concepts you need more help with, you may first take the math exercises quiz. If you choose a wrong answer on any quiz question, you will receive feedback linking to lessons you can study to improve your skills in that area. You may take these quizzes as many times as you like until the due date in order to improve your score.

All the mini-lessons to help you improve your skills in this week's Math concepts are linked below, located in the PathwayConnect Resource Center Links to an external site.. If you still need help after going through the available materials, there are suggestions at the bottom of each lesson page to get more help.

Week 4 Math Gathering Activity:

Each week you will have a math gathering activity which you will discuss with your gathering. Here is the question for this week’s gathering.

You are in charge of the food for a ward party. You estimate there will be 120 people who will attend. Your committee will make the lasagnas and salads.

Banquet Menu:

  • Lasagna: One pan can be cut into 18 servings
  • Salad: The salad recipe makes 15 servings

Questions:

  1. If all 120 people come to the banquet, how many pans of lasagna will the committee need to make?
  2. How many bowls of salad will they need to make?
  3. If each pan of lasagna costs $11.75 to make from scratch and each salad costs $6.50, how much money will the lasagna and salad for everyone cost?

Once you are confident with the Math concepts on this page and have completed the Gathering Math Activity above, you may mark it complete and continue with the week's activities.
