W09 Math Lesson: Fractions
Overview
Task: Study and work through the following math lesson AND complete the Math Gathering Activity prior to Gathering.
Last week you learned how to compare, add, and subtract fractions with different denominators. This week you will learn how to interpret improper fractions as well as how to multiply and divide fractions.
Making a Connection: Fractions
Imagine you need to estimate the amount of food for a party or imagine you need to divide a portion of something equally among your friends. How can fractions help you do this?
Math Instruction and Practice
This math lesson is broken into several mini-lessons, each containing a lot of material. Be sure to start early in the week in case you need extra time to study and practice. To save you time and quickly discover which concepts you need more help with, you may first take the math exercises quiz. If you choose a wrong answer on any quiz question, you will receive feedback linking to lessons you can study to improve your skills in that area. You may take these quizzes as many times as you like until the due date in order to improve your score.
All the mini-lessons to help you improve your skills in this week's Math concepts are linked below, located in the PathwayConnect Resource Center Links to an external site.. If you still need help after going through the available materials, there are suggestions at the bottom of each lesson page to get more help.
Week 9 Math Gathering Activity
You are throwing a pizza party for your friends. You estimate that each person will eat about 38 of a pizza and you expect 20 people to come. How much pizza should you order? (Hint: Multiply how much you think each person will eat by the number of people coming.)
As the party draws to an end, you realize that your guests did not eat as much pizza as you thought they would. There are 212 pizzas leftover that were originally cut into 8 slices each. You want to send the remaining 10 people at the party home with the same amount of leftovers. What fraction of a whole pizza will each guest take home with them?
(Hint: Convert the mixed number (leftover pizza) into an improper fraction to solve for how much each person took home. Then divide by the number of guests taking leftovers home.)
