Overview

Task: Study and work through the following math lesson AND complete the Math Gathering Activity prior to Gathering.

Imagine you and several friends want to go on a temple trip, but none of you has enough fuel on your own. You might have enough if you combine all your fuel together. How can you know if you will have enough combined?

In the math lesson this week we will start learning about fractions. Understanding how to work with fractions is an important skill to help prepare you for solving equations. Fractions are also sometimes used interchangeably with percentages, decimals, and ratios. The application for fractions ranges from cooking food to building buildings and so much more.

Making a Connection: Fractions

There are examples of fractions used throughout the scriptures. The following are just a few:

D&C 29:36 teaches us that ⅓ of the hosts of heaven rebelled against our Heavenly Father’s plan.
In Numbers 15, the Lord gave the children of Israel very specific fractional amounts they should use when offering their sacrifices.
The people of king Limhi had to pay ½ of all their possessions to the Lamanites in Mosiah 19:26.
We have been told to pay 1/10 in tithing.
In Mosiah 11:3, King Noah taxed his people ⅕ of all their substance in order to support his wickedness.

Math Instruction and Practice

This math lesson is broken into several mini-lessons, each containing a lot of material. Be sure to start early in the week in case you need extra time to study and practice. To save you time and quickly discover which concepts you need more help with, you may first take the math exercises quiz. If you choose a wrong answer on any quiz question, you will receive feedback linking to lessons you can study to improve your skills in that area. You may take these quizzes as many times as you like until the due date in order to improve your score.

Fractions

Week 07 Math Gathering Activity:

You and two other friends want to drive to the temple. You need one full gas can worth of fuel in order to get there and back. You have $\frac{3}{8}$ of a gas can. Your first friend has $\frac{4}{8}$ of a gas can. Your second friend has $\frac{1}{8}$ of a gas can. Between the three of you, do you have enough gas to make one full gas can worth of fuel in order to go to the temple? Work together with your group to draw a picture showing how much gas you have combined.

Check Answers

Take the time to draw the answer. You may want to use pie charts or line charts. The answer is yes. You have barely enough to go to the temple. $\frac{3}{8}$ + $\frac{4}{8}$ + $\frac{1}{8}$ = $\frac{8}{8}$ = 1
